Believing I’d see Seth again wasn’t something I could even force myself to do. Things had a way of not working out. At least I would have our one night together to hold on to forever. A memory I wouldn’t ever forget.

Unfortunately, I’d have to talk to Hawk. That definitely wasn’t going to be easy.

When I got back to the cabin, Finn was still awake. It was like he was waiting up for me. His lips curled into a smile as I sat down on the edge of my bed.

Finn dramatically rolled out of bed and padded across the floor. He lowered himself down on the mattress, resting his chin on his closed fists.

“Let’s talk,” Finn said.

“I don’t want to talk. I’m tired,” I replied.

“Fine,” he said, holding up his hands. “I was right, though, wasn’t I?”

I cocked my head to the side. “Right about what?”

“About telling that guy that stares at you how you felt,” Finn said.

“Maybe,” I said, biting back a smile. “But it was probably also a big mistake.”

Finn shook his head. Either he didn’t understand, or he didn’t agree.

“It’s not a mistake,” Finn said.

“I don’t think I’ll ever see him again,” I said. “Not to mention there is Hawk.”

“That guy from the park that didn’t like me?”

I smiled. “Neither of them like you.”

“Weird. I’m such a likable guy. I realize they see me as a threat. After all, which one of us is in your bed?” Finn asked, raising a brow.

“Funny,” I said.

“And true.”

I shrugged, feeling a pull in my chest. “Hopefully, this doesn’t hurt your feelings, but he has my heart.”

“Sappy,” Finn said, reaching over to touch my forehead. “Are you sick?”

I pushed away his arm. “I’m fine. It’s just that after everything, I don’t deserve anything good.”

“That’s crazy talk,” Finn said, leaning forward. “None of us deserve this life.”

“You wouldn’t say that if you knew what I did,” I mumbled.

“What did you do?”

I shook my head. “You know that’s not something we can talk about.”

“Why? They’re both asleep. It’s not even going to matter by tomorrow night.”

“You’ll think less of me.”

“There isn’t anything you could that would make me think less of you. Hell, even if you killed someone, I wouldn’t care.”

My jaw stiffened. It felt like there was sand under my eyelids.

Finn’s jaw dropped. “Oh, shit.” He scooted closer and placed his hand on top of mine. “I’m sorry. Is that what you did?”

I swallowed so hard my body jerked. “It’s not what you think. I can explain.”

“What makes you think that I wouldn’t understand?” Finn asked. “If you want to talk about it, I’ll listen.”

I shook my head, but the words spilled out of my mouth. “My mom and stepdad were upstairs fighting. Things had gotten pretty bad between them.”

Finn stared at me eagerly, waiting for more.

My eyes narrowed. “Why are you here?”

“I stole stuff,” Finn said. “It’s not exciting.”

“My story isn’t exciting either. You’re going to think I’m a horrible person,” I said, looking down at my hands. I shouldn’t have continued, but years of keeping it tucked away must have gotten to me.
